Biomass and Climate Change as Partners

David P. Smoot

A recent op-ed in one of the nation’s top political news sites called for energy policy makers at the EPA to consider a sensible forest biomass policy in the coming Clean Air Act. Certainly, there’s room for a balanced approach,  good for forests and biomass developers, and can also help combat climate change at the same time.

That’s the opinion editorial in The Hill authored by Bob Perciasepe, founder of the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES), an independent, nonprofit organization that advocates strong policy and action to address the twin challenges of energy and climate change.

Perciasepe suggests that biomass businesses should adhere to the already proven high standards created by state and federal forestry agencies. Across the US, foresters have built programs and practices to ensure that forests are well-managed and protected.

In Europe, climate change advocates and biomass are already benefiting from the other. He wrote: “Under EU regulations, forest biomass can be considered climate-friendly if it is harvested sustainably and if the carbon stocks from the forests where that biomass is harvested are being maintained or enhanced. Such an approach can help ensure that our forests remain as forests, that they remove more carbon than they release and that we move our energy systems to net-zero GHG emissions by 2050.”

We agree with that approach. Northwest Advanced Bio-Fuels also believes that biomass is the answer to future reservoirs of renewable energy. And it can be achieved without impacting climate change negatively. Like C2ES, we believe that an amenable future can be achieved by both sides.
