Helping Delta Air Lines Reduce Carbon Emissions
Today, Delta Air Lines announced more details about its ambitious carbon neutrality plan, including its plans to use sustainable aviation fuel in the future.
Northwest Advanced Bio-Fuels, LLC, (NWABF) is Delta’s long-term SAF Fuel provider, and we are thrilled to be a part of the airline’s efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions on the way toward zero-impact aviation.
In the announcement, Delta commits to air travel that does not damage the environment directly or indirectly via greenhouse gas emissions, noise, waste generation, or other environmental impacts. The airline noted in its announcement that in the near-term, it will invest in verified carbon offsets to achieve carbon neutrality.
Delta highlighted our partnership in the announcement as it described its efforts to replace 10 percent of its fuel with sustainable aviation fuel, (SAF), by 2030. From the announcement:
- SAF is an alternative to fossil fuel and can reduce emissions by up to 80 percent during its full lifecycle. Examples include bio-fuels and synthetic fuels. Delta’s medium-term goal is to replace 10 percent of its jet fuel refined from fossil fuel with SAF by the end of 2030. The company has agreed to purchase a future supply of 70 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel per year. That includes 10 million beginning in 2024 from Gevo and 60 million beginning in 2025 from Northwest Advanced Bio-Fuels, representing a projected 1.7 percent of Delta’s total annual fuel consumption, adjusted for 2019 flying levels.
Northwest Advanced Bio-Fuels, LLC, is excited for sustainable aviation fuel in the coming years. We are in the final stages of preparation to begin the FEL2 and then proceed to the FEL3 to complete the Front-end Engineering and Design Studies, (FEED).
NWABF has already received investment term sheets for the total required equity for construction CAPEX of the Project, from a world-class infrastructure investment firm eager to participate in the Project’s funding needs as well as future Projects.
This funding will enable the Company to facilitate the Project’s Engineering and Design phase prior to construction for the sustainable aviation fuel to supply Delta Air Lines as noted above. This partnership, announced in 2019, will go a long way to supplying Delta with the necessary sustainable aviation fuel to help meet its zero-impact aviation goals.
At Northwest Advanced Bio-Fuels, LLC, we believe that future travel from aviation can and will be powered exclusively by sustainable aviation fuel as more of this fuel becomes available. This is why we stay on course for a cleaner, more energy-efficient future ahead with Delta.
